Arthur Moon
Arthur Moon
“an electro-rock experience that can feel as trippy as Åshuvud's bouts with migraine-induced aphasia” - Billboard

Arthur Moon is the moniker of award-winning composer/singer Lora-Faye Åshuvud, who WNYC calls "an artist bent on upending your expectations of what a pop song should sound like." Åshuvud writes her lyrics using cut up newspaper and magazine articles, and describes the process of composing the experimental pop arrangements as similarly collage-like. "On the best days," she said in an interview with LPR, "it feels like playing a rousing game of Exquisite Corpse--except only with myself." The band’s debut EP Our Head was released on Velvet Elk Records in the Spring of 2017, after NOWNESS premiered their debut track/music video “Wind Up” the previous summer. The Arthur Moon band also includes Martin D. Fowler (composer for This American Life and Limetown), Cale Hawkins (Quincy Jones, Wyclef Jean, Bilal), Nick Lerman, Aviva Jaye and Dave Palazola.
Space Captain
Space Captain
Space Captain is a Brooklyn based psych-soul band singed to Brighton's Tru Thoughts and includes members Maralisa Simmons-Cook (vocalist/lyricist), Alex Pyle (bass and production), Gray Hall (guitar and production), Mike Haldeman (guitar), Joey Ziegler (drums), Joy Morales (keyboard) and Lessie Vonner (trumpet). They have appeared with BADBADNOTGOOD, Ghostface Killah, J. Views, Dresses, Kendra Morris and more. Lauren Laverne of BBC Radio 6 Music calls them "really interesting...a sound of their own."

Their initial release, Easier / Remedy, a double A-side reissue of two early tracks, received heavy play from Don Letts (BBC 6Music). In a period of open-minded experimentation via live shows and studio jams, Space Captain have alighted on a progressive fusion of r&b and psychedelic rock with tentacles spinning out into soul, hip hop, electronica and noise. The In Memory EP finds singer/lyricist Simmons-Cook exploring darker, more personal subjects with themes of mourning, the life cycle, lightness verses darkness, death and rebirth. In Memory has since seen notable play on Spotify's Fresh Finds Playlist, BBC Radio 6 Music and Bandcamp Weekly. Michael Gonzales (The Wire) wrote, "Space Captain's embrace of beauty is obvious. But it's nice to know they can get ugly when they want to."

New electro-pop outfit MMEADOWS is Kristin Slipp and Cole Kamen-Green. Kristin and Cole are perhaps best known for their work as part of Cuddle Magic -- a Brooklyn and Philadelphia-based chamber-pop band that Bob Boilen (of NPR’s All Songs Considered) says is one of his new favorites -- but the duo, together and separately, have also written and recorded with Beyonce, performed with Cyndi Lauper and Kimbra, and made beats with Yuka C. Honda.

Until last month, with the surprise release of a refreshing, modernized rework of Sade's "No Ordinary Love," Kristin and Cole managed to keep MMEADOWS [mostly] a secret, meeting late at night to chip away at a body of work. The quasiclandestine nature and dark setting of these midnight meetings found a way into the duo’s new music through undulating low frequencies, ecstatic vocal melodies, and sizzling analog synths. They'll release their debut EP late this spring.
