Summer Moon
Summer Moon
The brainchild of The Strokes' bassist, Nikolai Fraiture, Summer Moon is a music and arts collective currently featuring Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction, Camila Grey of Uh Huh Her and Noah Harmon of The Airborne Toxic Event.

Starting out as an "underground supergroup" (NME) in New York, when Fraiture got in a room with his friends Erika Spring (Au Revoir Simone), Tennessee Thomas (The Like) and solo artist Lewis Lazar, the band's debut single, "With You Tonight" immediately struck a chord with press and fans alike, becoming NME's "Track Of The Week" and featuring as the soundtrack for Alexa Chung's collaboration with AG Jeans.

"I started working on the album at home," recalls Fraiture. “A lot of the sounds and tones that ended up on the album’s title track, 'With You Tonight', came from the rough demos I did at my house. One of reasons the record is called With You Tonight is that, over time, the song and the title's meaning, came to represent the process and feel of the album as a whole."

Without the pressure of having to deliver an album within a certain period of time, coupled with the free-spirited nature of the band, Summer Moon has given Fraiture the freedom to experiment and expand his own musical horizons. "There wasn't any set plan at any point, which was a very liberating and exciting way for me to work. Of course, discipline is necessary in order to complete anything in that setting, but it did allow the songs to change and evolve the way they needed to; becoming a living, breathing thing.”

Once the demos became fully formed songs, Summer Moon's wanderlust took them from their New York roots to Austin and back again.

"We did most of the basic tracking at Vacation Island Studios with Matt Boynton, who did MGMT. The studio was tucked away in Brooklyn next to an overgrown parking lot filled with Puerto Rican Day parade floats and run-down classic cars.

“I then reached out to Brad Bell (Arcade Fire, The War On Drugs) at Public Hi-Fi Studios in Austin who helped produce some of the early tracks.”

With Fraiture playing many of the parts himself on the album, it resulted in heavy experimentation in order discover new sonic landscapes and fully capture how the songs should sound.

"My main goal for the album was to find the perfect balance between a classic feel with modern tones and textures," states Fraiture. "Most of the time, a live drummer is instrumental to the overall feel. But other times, a more programmed vibe is called for. And occasionally, the two make a perfect couple.

"The biggest challenge was making the synths work texturally with the other instruments. It was a combination of software synths at home and analog in the studio.”

With anticipation for the band's debut album running high following a flood of press coverage from the likes of Pitchfork, NME, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Vice and Consequence of Sound, their National TV debut on NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly airing four months before the album's release, and a 360/VR Interactive video–2017 is shaping up to be a busy year for Summer Moon.

“The Strokes’ Nikolai Fraiture leads New York underground supergroup Summer Moon, whose first song sounded like it’d been beamed from the future. ‘With You Tonight’, however, sounds more like the quartet have been sitting by azure seas, sipping cocktails from coconut shells. There are hints of New Order to its electro-funk undertones, alongside the sunny, trebly guitars of Men At Work’s ‘Down Under’ – an odd, but brilliant, combination.” NME

“… upbeat, danceable tracks with strong basslines and a slightly futuristic-meets-post punk vibe.” Vice

“The song is a breezy bit of electro-funk, an island of sun-doused guitars and plucky percussion.” Consequence Of Sound
