Sam Evian
Sam Evian
Sam Evian, (born Sam Griffin Owens) is a New York-based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.

Premium, Sam’s debut on Saddle Creek records, won audience and critical notice for songs that included the first single and video “Sleep Easy” (https://youtu.be/tqjVCNMTd_k). Premium’s release saw Sam Evian (Brian Betancourt on bass, Austin Vaughn on drums, and Adam Brisbin on guitar – often joined by Hannah Cohen for additional vocals) touring throughout the year with Whitney, Big Thief, Teenage Fanclub, Lucius, Rubblebucket and Luna, as well as headlining around the east coast.

Sam Evian returns with a new track, “I Need You,” a collaboration with Chris Cohen, whose solo and band records with Deerhoof and The Curtains were early inspirations for Sam. The musical dialogue took place over five days in Cohen’s garage studio as they tracked together with Sam on guitar and Chris on drums, and then shared overdubs. The resulting three songs will appear throughout the year, and herald a return to writing and recording for the next Sam Evian full-length album.

When not on the road, Sam is often found producing and engineering at Brooklyn’s Figure 8 studio, where he collaborates with artists such as Cass McCombs, Blonde Redhead, Deerhoof, Sam Amidon, Shahzad Ismaily, and many others. Saddle Creek recently released Sam’s production of the Wilder Maker single, “New Streets” (http://www.stereogum.com/1937208/wilder-maker-new-streets/premiere/).
Uni Ika Ai
Uni Ika Ai
Uni Ika Ai [pronounced: oo-nee eekuh eye] is a Brooklyn based dreampop / artpop band comprised of music veterans Maia Friedman (Bobby), Peter Lalish (Lucius, Elizabeth & The Catapult), Tom Deis (Via Audio), and Dan Drohan (Wilsen). The band’s recently released debut album, Keeping A Golden Bullseye In The Corner of My Mind, incorporates elements of experimentalism, psychedelic haze, and eclectically unique pop — a “rhythmic, wonderfully askew brand of ethereal pop” (Stereogum) that The Wild Honey Pie says is a “new kind of off-kilter dream pop that the genre has been waiting for.”

Uni Ika Ai was born out of a desire for improvisation and experimentation. While on tour with Lucius in 2014, Lalish would record improvised snippets made during sound checks and email them to Friedman, who would send improvised snippets recorded at home in Brooklyn, in return. The two musicians, once in the same room, would mold the abstract material into fully formed songs. For Bullseye, the band enlisted D. James Goodwin as engineer, producer, and saxophonist, having him add occasional exuberant accents of jazz-inspired improvisation to the album’s atmospheric doses of peace and chaos. “Just like dreams, [Uni Ika Ai’s] songs pulse on airwaves that are both viscerally familiar and also slightly out of touch with the world we’ve come to live in” (ThrdCoast).
Wilder Maker
Wilder Maker
Urban pastorals unfold in the music of Gabriel Birnbaum, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and writer behind the songs of Brooklyn's Wilder Maker. Wilder Maker's songs keenly observe landscapes of desire and abandon, filled with colorful characters and street revelations, in a musical setting as boldly diverse as their NYC home base.

Birnbaum's songs find expression through longtime collaborators Katie Von Schleicher, who releases her own mesmerizing solo work, on keyboards and vocals; Sean Mullins (Kevin Garrett) on drums; and Nick Jost (Baroness) on bass. Von Schleicher's singing balances and supports Birnbaum's writing and vocals, a counterpoint fully explored on "New Streets"/"Only Child," Wilder Maker's contribution to Saddle Creek's Document series of singles that introduce new work from innovative bands around the country. It marks Wilder Maker's first release since 2015's EP trilogy, Everyday Crimes Against Objects of Desire.

"New Streets," a restless stroll through an ecstatic day, driven by guitars, saxophones, and Von Schleicher's vocals, was recorded at Figure 8 Recording by Sam Owens, who records for Saddle Creek as Sam Evian, and features lead guitar from Adam Brisbin (Sam Evian, Jolie Holland). "Only Child," Birnbaum's poetic evocation of childhood echoes and ghosts, insinuates itself with familiar-feeling guitars until minor-key shivers reveal the song's aching heart. "Only Child" was recorded by Bryan Pugh at Rubber Tracks Brooklyn, and features the guitar work of another longtime associate, Will Graefe (Okkervil River, Star Rover).
