Catch Haley Heynderickx Performing Live on Wednesday at Rough Trade NYC
June 19, 2018
Haley Heynderickx (above, performing “Oom Sha La La” for Paste Studios) got some nice notices when the four-song EP Fish Eyes (stream it below) came out in 2016. But the Portland, Ore., folk singer-songwriter-guitarist really announced her considerable talents to the world upon (finally) releasing the long-player I Need to Start a Garden (stream it below)—her third attempt at a first LP—this past March. “From the opening note of I Need to Start a Garden, the new album captivates. Heynderickx, who considers guitarists John Fahey and Leo Kottke major influences, plucks a classical guitar that’s been detuned in such a convoluted manner that it almost sounds like a harp,” offers NPR Music. While Exclaim! dubs the album an “excellent debut. Heynderickx’s music sounds fresh and improvised, as much about process as it is about poetry and craft.” Find out how it all sounds live when the big-voiced performer plays Rough Trade NYC tomorrow night. Another PDX musician, Nick Delffs, opens the show.
